The art of sound… A Symposium on Old Vocal Arts

The main stage of Darb Al-Saai witnessed the holding of a new symposium entitled “The Art of Sound.. A Gulf Legacy”, which was part of the National Day 2022.

Dr. Hassan Rasheed, Media and Theatre Critic, Ibrahim Ali, Artist and Folk Composer, participated, as Adel Abdullah moderates.

At the beginning of the symposium, Dr. Hassan Rashid said: “The art of sound is equivalent to the association of man with more than one art of singing. After more than two centuries, there is no literature documenting this art and its progress throughout this period, whether it originates from Hijaz or from Yemen, or it is pure Gulf art, but the most accurate of what has been dealt with in this context is this being Gulf art, according to many studies and opinions”.

He added: “Efforts are being made to monitor the first attempts at the emergence of Gulf’s singing art. Many art symbols have also tried to dig up some memory of the art, like the late Youssef Duchy, and many have also contributed to this framework, including Khaled Jawhar in Qatar. Faisal al-Tamimi, Khalifa Gamaan in radio and television programmes and press interviews, but this does not satisfy the insatiable search for roots and origins, the artist Ibrahim Habib also has a history of this art through the availability of many songs with organic connections to sound art. Noting the efforts of the media and writer Dr. Ahmed Abdulmalik in this documentation, during the recent period.

Dr. Hassan Rasheed said that the history of this art depends on the narrators. Many interviews were often held during the early years of Qatar Radio with a constellation of artists of that time such as Salim Faraj, Abdulkareem Farah, Ibrahim Faraj, Idris Khairi and my fellow artists Gazi Hussein and Abdulaziz Mohamed.

He hoped that the career of sound artists, the revival of the legacy of ancient sound artists in the Gulf Arab States, and the availability of academic scientific study on the art of sound, would be documented in order to preserve the history of singing and the history of various models who had played a prominent role in presenting the art of living and still living in our collective memory.

The artist Ibrahim Ali presented a different bouquet of folk singing, with the accompanying band of Jubailat Folk Arts.

The National Day Organizing Committee highlighted Qatar’s marine heritage, especially at the Al-Bidaa event, from the preparation of traditional fishing bearings and tools, through ancient fishing species and pearl diving in the seas.

An art exhibition of images and objects at Al-Bidaa contained many photographic images that preserve aspects of ancestral life on the coast of the seas, their activities and traditional costumes during their hard work and breaks as well. Through the photographs, the museum highlights specific jobs performed by fishermen, one of which is “Al-Ghais”, who is a person that dives into the sea to collect oyster, and is considered the most essential person on the diving journey, the Maritime Museum also showcases the nature of work for “Al-Saib”, that is the person that catches the diver rope as they descend into the sea, who also has a key role in the process. One more important role is that of “Al-Skooni”, who is the person charged with the affairs of the ship’s rudder. “Al-Qalaf”, the maker of conventional wooden ships, is one of the tasks shown by the Maritime Museum while highlighting its tools.

In addition, the exhibition features small objects that embody fishing and ship-shaped instruments, including the “Al-Blad Wa Al-Belad”, a piece of lead placed at the bottom of the rope to measure depth. The art of Arabic calligraphy appeals to tourists from the fans of the World Cup

The Arabic calligraphy workshops in Liwan Al-Fan in Darb Al-Saai continues to witness a large turnout, particularly those visiting Qatar for the World Cup 2022. Mr. Youssef Schlar, one of the calligraphers and workshop presenters, said that the distinctive shape of Arabic letters in harmonious and inclined forms catches the eye, and noted that a delegation of Argentina fans had visited Liwan Al-Fan, and they tried to write their names in Arabic as a memory from the State of Qatar and from the World Cup. The letters with aan arch (cup-shaped), such as “ن”, “ت”, and “ث”, attract them greatly because of their unique and interesting shape.

Schlar explained that one of the most attractive letters for tourists is the letter “خ” representing the sound “Kha” because some names such as José (pronounces Khose), Juaolo (Khauolo) and Alejandro (Alekhandro) usually use the letter “J” to represent such sound, which provoked their curiousity and intrigued them. On his part, Mr. Mostafa Amin, an Arabic calligrapher, stressed that the appeal of non-Arabic communities to Arabic letters is tangible because the drawing of each letter attracts tourists, adding that there is a large demand for Arabic Caligraphy courses and the writing of foreign names in letters.

The traditional game “Al-Dama”… Maritime heritage transmitted by grandparents to children

This Darb Al-Saai event includes various activities and events aimed at preserving the legacy of Qatar’s marine life. One of these activities is the game “Al-Dama”, a game that served as the first haven for recreation for divers, especially after the end of the fishing season with many strenuous activities.

On the game and what it represents at Darb AlSaai, Mr. Nasser Al-Khalifi said: “the game is a legacy game played by parents and grandparents after returning from the sea, ending the diving season and entering winter, in home gatherings and cafes. The organizing committee for Darb Al-Saai was keen to highlight the heritage life of the ancient Qatari fisherman and the magnitude of their suffering, setting up the game in “Qarqoor”, which are tent-shaped metal nets used for fishing.

The game is not only a recreational game, it is a way to teach young people how to fish and the dangers surrounding this work, and it was played in cafes in wooden chairs and is one of the most important and famous recreational activities that alowed one to exercise their mental abilities. In this regard, Mr. Nasser Al-Khelaifi explained that this game resembles chess in some of its rules, and is distinguished from it by some special rules imspired by the lives of parents and grandparents, which reflects planning, anticipating opponent movements and maintaining a high profile of mind and activity.

This game continues to appeal to many young Qataris, praised by Mr. Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who said that this game stimulates young people’s intelligence and maintains beneficial mental activity rather than electronic games that could be both dangerous and harmful due to the long hours it requires its audience to spend playing.

In this regard, Mr. Yusef Ahmad Al-Kwari, an entrepreneuer in the industry, said: “It is remarkable that there is a large turnout of families, residents and international visitors to see and learn about the country’s heritage, noting that he has been in the industry for four years, in which he was able to produce various kinds of perfumes including special mixes of Oud and other perfumes that he had prepared himself, adding that the technology has helped him to familiarize himself with the production work. Mr. Al-Kwari said that he must explain to his customers, the origin and history behind the products they’re buying (from Oud, to Bukhoor and other perfumes), and allow them to try his products. He noted that the Qatari people’s day-to-day habit of maintaining a pleasant smell was not limited to occasions, indicating that he had extensive experience in identifying the authentic Oud and excelling in its production.

He added that this industry requires skill and accumulated expertise in order for the trader to learn about people’s tastes and choices. It is among the necessary areas that are indispensable in the local house. He expressed his pleasure in welcoming non-Arab communities and fans to try Oud, Bukhoor and perfume. He said: “I dream of creating a factory for the manufacture, cleaning, packaging, classification, manufacture and production of aromatic oil”.

Darb AlSaai evokes Abdulaziz Nasser’s Career, “Dean of the Qatari Song”

Darb AlSaai evokes Abdulaziz Nasser’s Career, “Dean of the Qatari Song”:

The main stage of Darb Al-Saai witnessed yet a new symposium, within the activities of the National Day of the State 2022, under the theme “Abdulaziz Nasser.. Dean of the Qatari Song”.

The symposium was attended by Ibrahim al-Mutawah, researcher and media specialist, Yousra Mohammed, a singer, and moderated by Adel Abdullah.

The symposium was a tribute to the late musician Abdulaziz Nasser’s career and highlighted his role in the founding of the Qatari song, since his founding of Al-Adwaa (the lights) band, and his subsequent role in the spread of the Qatari song beyond the borders of the homeland.

On his part, Mr. Ibrahim al-Mutwa emphasized that the late musician Abdulaziz Nasser’s artistic life spanned about 50 years, “it is the first spark that ignited Al-Adwaa band, and his first tune was for Palestine, and he was supposed to be presented in his voice, however the unfortunate events of 1967 (Al-Naksa) prevented it”.

He pointed out that the audience knew the late musician through the Qatari heritage, which he employed in his work. He stressed that a large number of Qatari singers sang to Abdulaziz’s music, such as Faraj Abdul Karim, Ali Abdul Sattar, Nasser Saleh and others.

He said “Abdulaziz Nasser linked his academic studies at the Institute of Arab Music in Cairo with his artistic talent, which produced pioneering works, and his company of Arab musicians in Cairo contributing to the spread of his music and work to include that with many Arab artists.

Mr. Ibrahim Al-Mutwa pointed out that the genius of the late musician Abdulaziz Nasser lies in his transformation of the song from a stereotypical rhythm to a song in which numerous verses are used, which gave the song a joy and a kind of long psyche, and they were suitable to present in any Arab spot, not just Qatari.

He added “the song “Allah ya Omri Qatar” is still a timeless song, sung by every Qatari and Arab, and so his works are graceful, daring and rebellious to the traditional style of the Qatari song.

He stressed that the company of Arab composers in Cairo inspired the changes he was able to make to  the Qatari song, and laid the foundations for it in terms of melody and singles.

He said: “The work of the late musician Abdulaziz Nasser preserved the spirit of authenticity, with his openness to contemporary music, which made his work reach everyone inside and outside Qatar, as he used the rhythm of “Al-Maqsoom”, as well as his employment of the art of sound and his presentation of the national song. He was keen on employing expressions that are specific to the Qatari heritage, as it shows in his national work. He stressed that his ability to employ Qatari and Gulf heritage made him reach the largest geographical area. He used the rhythm of Fujiri and was able to present it to the Arab listener, which means that he did not disguise Qatari heritage, but presented it to the Arab recipient in the best way possible.

He continued: “The late musician was inspired by the poetic vocabulary, and it had affected him positively, as he was known to be a persistent and hardworking artist who moved between more than one source to explore more vocabulary”.

The symposium included a number of works by the late musician Abdulaziz Nasser, including the songs “Allah Ya Omari Qatar”, “Ohebok ya Quds”, “Walhan w Musayr” and others. The symposium also included a recorded broadcast of the song “Umm Al-Hanaya”.

The Arabian Oryx Film.. A National Film Production to Preserve Qatari Heritage

The Arabian Oryx film event at Darb Al-Saai witnesses a great turnout from families, as large numbers of them attend daily to watch the film that tells the story of the life cycle of the Oryx, which is one of the distinctive signs of the Qatari environment. The Organizing Committee for the National Day celebrations has provided the appropriate vibes for visitors to Darb Al-Saai to enjoy watching the movie, with a large cinema screen and comfortable seats. In addition, there is a group of Arabian Oryx animals next to the film screening area to allow visitors to take photos with them.

Salem Hussain Al Safran, Assistant Director of the Natural Reserves Department at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, who is in charge of the event, said that the aim of the Oryx film is to shed light on this endangered animal and introduce the public and visitors to Darb Al Saai about the Oryx as a Qatari heritage, in the form of a story between a mother and her newborn. Where the film deals with the life cycle of this animal collectively, the nature of the land in which it lives and its harmony with the rest of the animals in that environment, and reveals how the mother helps her newborn how to coexist with the surrounding environment.

Al Safran added that this animal has an important symbolism in the State of Qatar, and was chosen as a logo for Qatar Airways for example, so the state pays great attention to it, creating a lot of reserves for it to keep it from extinction.

He noted that the first thing the State did to preserve this animal was to establish the Al-Maha Proliferation Centre in 1979 at Shehaniyah Farm. The second reserve, Asherj Reserve, was established in northern Qatar in 1991. In 1997, the Al-Mas’habeya Reserve was established in southwestern Qatar close to the Qatari-Saudi border, to which this animal was transported in order to breed naturally. In addition to studying these new locations as fit for purpose, because of its different terrain, as differences were seen between animals living in different places depending on their nature. That helped Qatar figure out the right environment for this animal.

The Assistant Director of the Department of Nature Reserves said that a special team of veterinary doctors, nurses and assistants have been hired to ensure these animals stay healthy, in addition to carrying out an annual immunization operation for them to overcome potential diseases. He added: “There are programmes carried out by the Ministry for the the Arabic Oryx, including the Genetic Footprint Programme, which is designed to focus on the proliferation of good quality of these animals, the genetic footprint identifies each species and gives it a special number, after which samples of a number of oryx’s heads are taken and tested in cooperation with Weill Cornell University of Medicine to determine the breeding chain that will mate annually. In order to produce a generation that can withstand extreme conditions, in addition to preserving the shape and aesthetic of this animal.

Visitors to Darb Al-Saai buy heritage items that have historical significance related to the Qatari house, in the auction that takes place in the main yard near the second gate of Darb Al-Saai. Upon hearing the voice of the caller in the old traditional way, the sale process takes place, in a vivid simulation of what used to happen in the ancient Al-Furjan and Haraj, where the seller announces his commodity, and everyone who wants to buy offers the appropriate price for him, so whoever increases his price comes at a higher price, so that the sale is in the end to the owner of the highest price of the items being auctioned.

Mr. Hisham Naanous, the supervisor of the auction in Darb Al-Saai, said that the idea of the auction reminds of the Qatari heritage, where ancient heritage items related to the Qatari house are displayed with the implementation of the auction in the old auction method that was present in the ancient neighborhoods in Qatar, with the aim of transferring these vibes to Darb. The auction supervisor pointed out that the prices are affordable for everyone, and there is a great demand from the public, because everyone in Qatar is keen on acquiring antiques, and we always find in the Qatari majlis such old tools that Qataris are proud of because they are part of their heritage.

Mr. Hisham Al-Nanus continued: The auction does not stop at displaying and selling heritage items (antiques) only, but also has an educational aspect, as it introduces visitors, especially young people, to the life of the people of Qatar in the past and the most important tools they used and how they used them. It also provides simple information on some related matters such as Arabic coffee and tools used in it, stressing that this heritage and cultural event transmits the legacy of fathers and grandfathers to new generations.

As for how Qatari women protect themselves and preserve their heritage and culture, Dr. Aisha Al-Mannai affirmed that Qatari women are immunized by religion, away from extremism, and with commitment to their values and customs, in addition to respecting the cultures of others, peaceful coexistence and respect for others and their beliefs, which is what the State of Qatar achieves, appreciating women’s access to all fields.

Dr. Aisha Al-Kuwari said that we are lucky and we have obtained all our rights without striving, unlike others. The right to education, work and inheritance is guaranteed to everyone according to Islamic law, and the reality proves the presence of women in all fields of life and they walk side by side with the men to achieve Qatar Vision 2030.

She added that women contribute positively in achieving the national strategy, in which everyone shares responsibility. She supported what Dr. Aisha Al-Mannai said of Qatari women’s pride in their identity and heritage, and that they always carry their identity with them wherever they are.

Our solution is our strength

(From the speech of His Highness the Amir, may God protect him, at the opening of the 50th session of the Shura Council)

Since the founding saga and through the generations, Qataris have faced many challenges, revealing in the past as well as in the present a deep
awareness of their ability to respond. For all the tribulations of nature and the stakes of construction in various colors. For decades, historical
events have shaped the Cree in which they fought tournaments In it, they made precious and precious sacrifices, milestones to their identity,
and these facts became the fulcrum of their personality, and their national unity was the source of their identity.
Their strength, whose predicaments were born as they defended their homeland, inspired them by the need to unite under one flag just as it
inspired Qatari youth. They were headed by Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed bin Thani with the dream of establishing a state. Throughout the
course of their history, Qataris have been able to strengthen their national unity with the conciliation of God, giving many examples of their
honesty, humility, and ability. To keep the promises and face many challenges and difficulties, and the promise of the 2022 World Cup is nothing
but an extension of those promises made by the Qataris to themselves. And before the world to win the challenges of civilization, and that
promise would not have been fulfilled on the ground had it not been for their adherence to their national unity that made them proud.
By belonging to their homeland and loyal to their leadership, it has become a sign of the values that grandparents and fathers have etched in
them, to be faithful to future generations. Generations of all their components have been working in one ship with solidarity and pride, faithful
to the destination of the compass that is moving in the direction of civilizational progress, to write Qataris are epics in the present with their
work, values and constant aspiration for a better future for their homeland, just as their ancestors recorded their epics in the past, Their unity
will increase their determination to pursue efforts to achieve their goals and to recognize the social, cultural, and economic challenges facing
their modern state in the intertwining of its relations with the world.

Preparations Underway for Qatar National Parade 2021

This year’s Qatar National Day will be full of exceptional shows, new surprises, and dazzling performances that reflect the Gulf nation’s culture and accomplishments.

However, the celebrations will be a little different to previous years. General Salem bin Fahd Al Ahbabi, Commander of the Military Performances and Music Center, Qatari Amiri Forces, said in an interview on Qatar TV that no military vehicles will be roaming during the parade on the Corniche for the first time in years.

“This year, we will not use military vehicles, and the reason is that there are other activities in the Corniche area, and this will be the same for 2022, one street will be for infantry show and the other street will be used for services only,” he explained.

However, there will still be a “dazzling and impressive” infantry parade, the official assured, as well lots of surprises – one of which is the participation of large naval vessels that have entered service, and a new aircraft.

“For the National Day parade, there will be great surprises, and I don’t want to reveal it, but there will be a special show for the first time, which I have never seen before anywhere in the world, especially in infantry,” he said.

“You will see something impressive. We presented this idea to the Minister of Defence and he approved the show in the parade and the infantry display will be extremely accurate and unconventional.”

Qatar’s national day is observed on 18 December and marks the day in which founding father Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani succeeded his father as the amir in 1878 to lead the country towards unity.

On this day each year, Qataris along with residents take to the streets to celebrate the country that they consider home. Many decorate their cars and homes, draping them with national flags, others take to the corniche to witness the annual parade and cheer on as planes show off acrobatic maneuvers overhead.

Katara will also have a spectacular infantry show that will reflect the country’s pride and celebratory spirit. Meanwhile, Souq Al Wakra and Souq Waqif will also feature several performances and shows to keep the community entertained.

“We have been ready for a while to share the joys to citizens on National Day celebrations, and what you saw in Katara is a performance by a group of infantry and this group has participated in several shows in Russia. You will see the performances of these groups in Katara, Souq Al Wakra and Souq Waqif,” Al-Ahbabi said.

“We are very prepared, and there will be surprises this year, taking into account the country’s hosting of the Arab Cup.”

All the preparations have been completed for the National Day parade at Doha Corniche on Friday. The National Day parade will be held this year under strict preventive and precautionary measures against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

This was announced by the QND 2021 Security Committee at a press conference on Tuesday.

Head of the Security Committee Brigadier Dr Ali Khujaim Al Adbi said the families of the health sector personnel and the participating bodies only will be allowed to witness the national parade this year through special invitations in compliance with the exceptional precautionary and preventive measures to ensure health and safety of all members of society.

The Organizing Committee has allocated 2,569 seats for the invitees in four platforms.

He said the entry will be for invitees only as one permit for one person, and the attendees must show the Ehteraz application in green status.

They are required to adhere to precautionary and health measures and physical distancing. He said they must stay in their seats and not move till the end of the parade, and avoid smoking, chanting or singing, and should adhere to the designated paths to the parking spaces as specified in the invitation cards.

He said the health measures are aimed at preventing COVID-19 spread, and to maintain the safety of the public. The body temperature of the attendees will be taken, and they must wear face masks, maintain safe distance, and use hand sanitiser.

He also called upon all those invited not to accompany any people with them to the parade, adding that no citizen or resident who does not hold an invitation card will be allowed to enter.

He said the committee is concerned with ensuring security of the parade that starts from the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers covering the entire Corniche until the Sheraton Hotel intersection and then towards the direction of Al Fardan Tower and then to Al Barzan Tower, from there to the Theater intersection, then to the Wadi Al-Sail Fire Station intersection, after which it heads to the Al Mannai underpass, then to the Souq Waqif signal, to the Amiri Diwan intersection in the direction of (Fanar), then to Qatar National Bank signals and to the General Secretariat again.

The Corniche waterfront will be completely closed and the public will not be allowed to enter, he added. Entry is only permitted for those authorized through invitations to attend, as each invitee is given an invitation card with a barcode that determines the direction of the car’s path to the parking directly.

He said parking spaces are also allocated for the guests in three locations — Western Bidda parking near Qatar Bowling Center with 792 lots, southern Bidda parking lot with 739 parking spaces, and the northern Bidda parking with 563 lots.

There will be medical units on the Corniche to deal with any emergency situations in addition to the presence of civil defense teams, he said.

Brigadier Dr Al Adbi added that the fireworks will be on the Doha Corniche at 8:30 pm on Friday. He called on the public to follow health requirements and precautionary measures
